Fernando Pessoa’s Lisbon: An intimate and cosmopolitan city

The city of Lisbon is the protagonist in Fernando Pessoa’s work. In the masterful poet’s verses, the Lusitanian capital of the beginning of the 20th century emerges in all of its splendor, light, and esthetic characteristics that made it one of the greatest cities of literature and tourism worldwide. Lisbon, just like Pessoa, has many faces! The old city with the “colorful houses”; elegant and bourgeois Chiado; Baixa, where Pessoa worked; and the Tagus river that inspired the verses of Álvaro de Campos as well as the prose of The Book of Disquiet...

In this book, we find many marvelous portraits of a modern and metaphysical Lisbon that is intimate and cosmopolitan at the same time. Pessoa was born in Lisbon. In this capital, he lived a significant part of his life, cherishing his city in words that today follow the experience of more and more travelers, in a tour full of wonder and poetry. “Oh, Lisbon, my home.”

An experience guided by someone who knows

Fabrizio Boscaglia, the guide for “Fernando Pessoa’s Lisbon,” is one of the young Pessoa scholars whose scientific research has most awakened interest in both universities and the media in recent years. His daily work on Pessoa’s assets and mauscripts, developed at the University of Lisbon and Lusófona University, has produced an original approach to the study of Oriental cultures (Arabic, Persian, etc.) through Fernando Pessoa’s work.

At the same time, his love for Lisbon and his passion for storytelling turned him into, starting in 2013, the reference in Lisbon with respect to guided tours of Fernando Pessoa’s Lisbon and of other Portuguese poets. The literary tours offered by Lisboa Pessoa Hotel and guided by Fabrizio Boscaglia are true cultural experiences oriented by a specialist that, as opposed to commercial stereotypes, provide the participant wth a surprising (re)discovery of Lisbon and of Pessoa himself.
